Silver Woods Express Opens at Silver Star

Under brilliant blue skies and wintry temperatures, British Columbia government cabinet minister Tom Christensen and Silver Star President Jane Cann recently cut the ribbon to open Silver Star Mountain Resort’s six million dollar Silver Woods Express.

Christensen, BC’s Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, has skied at Silver Star since he was five years old and quipped about the “early days” when you had to be over thirteen years of age to ride certain lifts. He praised the Schumann family for their continued investment in this fast-growing four-season resort. “Bravo! And thanks for your faith in British Columbia,” Christensen said. Members of Norway’s World Cup Nordic ski team were also in attendance, taking a day off from training for the Night Sprints races at Silver Star.

Made by Leitner-Poma in Grand Junction, Colorado with civil engineering and installation coordinated in Kelowna, this high-speed detachable quad has been finished and load-tested since mid-October. Silver Woods offers 360 acres of all-new skiing terrain on ten runs and five glades. Vertical drop is 359 meters – almost 1,200 vertical feet. The base of the Silver Woods lift is 140 meters (400 feet) below the Comet Express, adding length to runs on Silver Star’s Vance Creek side of the mountain.

Silver Woods Express Statistics:

  • Type: Leitner Poma Detachable Quad
  • Lift cost - $4.5 million CDN, slope prep and other associated costs $1.5M CDN, total - $6M CDN
  • Length – 1,235 meters (4,051 feet)
  • Vertical - 359 meters (1,177 vertical feet)
  • Number of chairs – 66
  • Uphill capacity – 1,842 skiers per hour
  • Ride time - 4.1 minutes
  • Terrain - 360 acres, ten new runs, five new glades – northeast facing aspect will preserve snow and provide excellent early and late season conditions.

Since purchasing Silver Star Mountain Resort in 2002, Schumann Resorts has put $18 million in on-hill improvements and $54 million in new accommodations. Silver Star Mountain Resort is located 18 kilometers (12 miles) east of Vernon, BC, and about an hour’s drive from Kelowna International Airport in British Columbia’s Thompson-Okanagan Tourism Region.
